A Different Kind Of Highlight

A few years ago the NHL changed the rules so that no game can end in a tie. The games now go into a shootout if the game is still tied after 5 minutes of OT. I like the shootout and it has produced several great highlights but none quite like the one that I saw today.

I saw this video on ESPN.com today and it was so funny that I had to post it here. This is an AHL goalie (NHL farm league) in a shootout a few days ago. Let’s just say this guy might have some anger management issues…

New Years Day- 2009

Yesterday I sat down to watch the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. It was a little different this year. Instead of me sitting out in the freezing cold like last year to be at the game I was sitting on my couch with a fire n  in the fireplace. The Red Wings won the game 6-4 in a good game.

Later I sat down again to watch the Orange Bowl. Cincinnati had their first bowl appearance in 58 years or something like that. Cincinnati lost the game but it was still a close game until the end when a roughing the kicker call gave Virginia Tech a first and then when Cincinnati got the ball back they threw and interception. It was still a good game even though I would have liked the outcome to be different.

Miller Time

I have some more good news for Sabres fans. They signed Ryan Miller for to a five-year contract extension. He’s not going to go to Detroit like everyone was saying anytime soon. The Sabres have him until the 2013-2014 season.

Other hockey news: The next Winter Classic is at Wrigley Field between the Red Wings and Blackhawks.

Off-Season News

Good news for any Sabres fans out there. The Sabres re-signed Paul Gaustad to a four year deal and they also signed goalie Patrick Lalime to backup Miller.

6 Players, 1 Full Game

Today I played a hockey game for a team that I’m not on but they needed people so I was asked to play. We did need more people, a lot more people. We played the whole game with six players and a goalie, for those who don’t know hockey that means that we only had one guy to substitute. I was so tired after just the first five minutes of the game and I had to play forty more minutes. I don’t remember ever being that tired before in my life and I hope that I never have to be that tired ever again.

A Night Of Lasts

Last night I had a my last hockey game. This league that I had the game for is really just a fun league. The game didn’t count towards anything but of course we still wanted to win. We won the game by a lot and it was fun but the best part of the game happened with 32 seconds left in the third period. I was on the ice for my last shift of my “career” and I scored. The puck was passed to me by my brother. It was a great way to end everything. I scored on my last shift. I had two other good chances to score earlier in the game but I just couldn’t finish until those last seconds. It was a night of lasts. I played my last game and scored my last goal on my last shift.

Skills Competition Highlights

Here are some of the highlights from the NHL skills competition last night. My favorite event was the breakaway challenge at the end of the competition.
